The Prince’s Gaze
Prince Promise looked down from his horse.
His eyes met Uli’s.
And something unusual happened.
He did not look away.
The villagers noticed immediately. Whispers spread through the crowd.
One old woman leaned toward another and whispered:
“This kind of look always brings trouble.”
The prince slowly smiled.
“What is your name?” he asked.
Uli hesitated before answering.
“Uli, my prince.”
The prince studied her face for a moment longer than expected.
A palace guard leaned closer to him.
“My prince, we must continue the journey.”
But Prince Promise was still curious.
“Why have I never seen you before?” he asked.
Uli lowered her eyes again.
“I stay where important people do not look.”
The prince gave a small, thoughtful smile.
Then he turned his horse and continued down the road.
But just before disappearing from view, he turned once more…
And looked back.
